J.G. Zimmerman: It Was One Of These Moments
May 29 through June 30, 2007
Opening Reception: Friday, June 1, 2007, 6 - 9 PM
J.G. Zimmerman’s work is inspired by technology and its effects on culture, specifically how cultures use technology to adjust to and overcome the natural environment, and when cultures change and adapt to new technologies and their resulting environments. Zimmerman feels his role as an artist is to record and contextualize these anthropological events. The pieces in this show are examples from three ongoing bodies of work.
The prints conceptually document and investigate aviation artifacts from engineering, political, anthropological and sociological positions. Compositionally the work fingers the components of shape, surface, and (graphic) elements to reflect a range of artistic constructs.
The resin drawings are a response to the second Gulf War and what Zimmerman feels are antiquated iconography used in our domestic political discourse. Conceptually his process of rendering these images and embedding them in resin is an attempt to humanize and then freeze the iconography and force antiquity.
The sculpture, abstract and non-representational, is designed using modern CAD techniques and constructed of welded steel (others include canvas & pop-rivets). The works are studies of engineered forms, components and techniques.
