Altered Spaces
Altered Spaces is a body of work consisting of charcoal drawings and encaustic paintings. With the drawings, I set out to explore spontaneous expression. Experimenting with charcoal and erasers resulted in highly energetic, emotional images. Both the intensity and figurative nature of this series surprised and shocked me. It is a significant departure from the minimal abstraction that I have been pursuing for many years.
After completing the drawings, I returned to working on the encaustic paintings. In contrast to the works on paper, my approach to the paintings was more formal, given that encaustic paint is a less flexible medium to work with than charcoal. The focus of these paintings is color, light and space with linear drawing elements integrated into the layers of wax, infusing them with some of the energy and personal mark-making from the drawings.
